Professional Headshots for a Dollar!

Gone are the days of closely cropping a photo from your sister's wedding (since it's the only picture of you in a suit) to use on your LinkedIn profile. For just $1 you can get a headshot that will be perfect for LinkedIn.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, April 9), from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the law school courtroom, the Student Bar Association will host a professional headshots event. Hope you can make it!

Clerkship Program Info Sessions

State judicial clerkship season is upon us! If you're interested in learning more about how to apply for post-graduate clerkships at the Washington State Supreme Court or Washington State Court of Appeals (as well as courts in other states), be sure to attend one of the two upcoming clerkship program info sessions: Monday, April 7 from 5:15 to 6:00 pm in room 110 or Wednesday, April 9 from 12:00 to 12:45 pm in room 110. If both of the meeting times conflict with your class schedule, please let Erin Fullner know; CPD will work to schedule a make-up session if needed.

At the info session you'll get a clerkship application handbook, learn the ins and outs of the intricate clerkship application process, and have the opportunity to join the clerkship program listserv.

For those interested in federal clerkships who have not yet had a clerkship meeting with CPD, that application season is well underway. There may still be an opportunity to apply to positions, so please join us at the info session, but the focus at this point will mainly be state appellate clerkships.

If you're not sure whether a clerkship is right for you, attend the meeting to learn a bit more. If you're an especially strong writer, a judicial clerkship could be a great fit for you.

A word of clarification: Judicial clerkships are different from judicial externships. While externships are student positions where you can work for a judge for class credit, clerkships are post-graduate, paid positions. They usually last one to two years and are typically done during the first year or two after graduation from law school. Clerkship applications sent out this spring/summer (2014) will be for positions that begin in the fall of 2015, as a result, 2Ls are especially encouraged to apply at this time. 3 and 4Ls are also welcome to attend the info meeting and apply, but keep in mind that applying at this point would likely create a gap year after graduation. 1Ls, feel free to schedule an appointment with Erin Fullner to get preliminary information about the judicial clerkship process, especially if you think you'd be a good candidate for a clerkship in federal court, but there's no need to attend an info session at this point.

Loyola Patent Interview Program

Loyola University Chicago School of law is hosting the 2013 Patent Law Interview Program on Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1 in Chicago, Illinois.  This is a nationwide interview program that targets patent law employers, rising 2L and 3L students, and students in Intellectual Property LLM programs.

Last year roughly 125 employers, 190 law schools, and 1,700 law students from across the country participated in the program.  The program is entirely pre-selected, which means that students submit resumes and transcripts to bid on interviews with the employers they are interested in, and employers then review the materials of the students who bid on them and select the students they wish to interview at the program.  Last year, approximately half of the participating students were selected for interviews.

Students with undergraduate or graduate degrees in engineering or a technical science should consider registering for the program.  You do not need to be patent bar eligible to register, although the vast majority of employers participating in the program are seeking patent bar eligible students.

For more information on the program, please refer to the Loyola Patent Program website at: http://www.luc.edu/law/career/patent_students.html.

Online student registration for this year’s Patent Law Interview Program will begin on Monday, February 10 and close on Monday, March 3.

CPD will pay the registration fee for any attending students.

2014 LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITIONS

2014 LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT SUMMER CLERKSHIP COMPETITIONS

SPONSORED BY

THE WASHINGTON STATE BAR ASSOCIATION AND
THE KING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION

TWO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS - $6,000.00 each

DEADLINE:  FRIDAY, APRIL 4, @ 12:00 NOON

Below is information about two summer clerkship opportunities for non-graduating students (including 1L students).

The two scholarships are sponsored by the Labor and Employment Sections of the WSBA and the KCBA, respectively.  The clerkship awards fund summer employment with a public interest component in the labor and employment law field.  You can find the detailed application Guidelines on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.  If you are interested, review the guidelines and prepare now by contacting the potential placement organization where you would like to gain experience and interviewing to determine if it is willing to host you for summer employment if you win one of the two summer clerkship competitions.  The best news is that when the potential employers understand that the student’s salary is paid for, they are thrilled and often jump at the chance to have a fully-funded summer employee, providing you with the incredible opportunity to gain experience in the field!

Interested students should:

1.    Read the Guidelines posted on the Labor and Employment Law (LELA) TWEN site.

2.    Decide on the qualifying agency that you would like to work for.  (The Guidelines include a list of qualifying agencies.  If an organization of your choice does not appear on the list, however, inquire with Professor Natasha Martin or Professor Charlotte Garden to determine whether the agency meets the requirements for acceptable placements set forth in the Guidelines.

3.    Interview with your chosen agency and verify that, if you win one of the awards, it will allow you to work there fully funded this summer. Then submit your application by 12:00 NOON on FRIDAY, APRIL 4, 2014. (Candidates submit only one application which is considered for both awards by the selection committee.)

For further information, see the LELA TWEN site or contact the Labor and Employment Law Faculty Members, Advisor Professor Natasha Martin (nmartin@seattleu.edu) as well as  Professor Charlotte Garden (gardenc@seattleu.edu).
